In less time than you’d think, Silver was in a circle of men facing “the brute” as Biff had dubbed him. She had dueled on several occasions, unfortunately for much of the same kind of reasons. The fact she was a woman made a lot of people not take her seriously.

Although Peter was the better swordsman, and she preferred the no-nonsense of her pistol, she knew the benefits of challenging someone to a duel. They wouldn’t refuse for fear of their honor, and she was a capable swordsman, which usually took them by surprise. She was pretty good about sizing up her opponent before the fight, but she was unsure with this one.

They stood at the ready, swords drawn and placed in front of them. At John’s mark, they began.

The man was fast, much faster than Silver thought was possible with his stocky frame. He lunged first, and she twisted to the side, just barely avoiding his attack. He got his footing and pressed his advantage, not letting up his attack for even a moment. She continued to dodge completely on the defensive, feeling like she was barely keeping up.

Predicting her next move, he moved right and then swung his sword to the left, cutting her arm and drawing blood. She hardly felt the pain but knew that now was the time to use her secret weapon. She changed hands, her sword now in her left and dominant hand, and pressed forwards, fighting with new strength.

She didn’t usually have to change hands when fighting, so this man was good enough to need it. She pressed forwards with new vigor, taking the brute by surprise. With the last bit of fancy swordplay, she twisted her sword around his, disarming him. His sword flew blade over handle, which she gently caught in her right hand.

“I believe,” she said panting and holding both swords at his throat, “That is the end of our duel.”

His face was red, and he was shaking with rage. “You insolent wench! You cheated, the deal is off!”

“I didn’t cheat,” she said calmly. She was used to this kind of behavior from a defeated foe. “We have all these witnesses to prove so.”

She looked around at the shocked faces of the men he employed and the gleeful ones of her crew. “Did any of you see any foul play?” When no one answered immediately she said, “Speak up!”

Still, no one answered. “There you see?” she said, turning back to the brute.

He wasn’t taking this defeat easily. In one swift movement, he charged at her, for what Silver would never know since John stepped in his way before he could do anything. The man barreled into him as John put out a hand, grabbing the other man’s hand and spinning him around while pinning the man’s hands behind his back.

“I believe,” said John, addressing the crowd in front of him. “That our duel has come to an end. Now if you’d all get back to work, and we shall be on our way.
